Abandoned persons are a big burden for the 2 hospitals in Winam. One hospital has ‘adopted’ 10 children. They came with their mothers who died in hospital and nobody came to claim the bodies or the children, so they stayed at the hospital. The same goes for patients without relatives, who are too frail to live on their own.
Help set up a health care program for abandoned patients/orphans.
A comprehensive healing program will promote family/community involvement in providing all round care for those abandoned in hospitals. This will relieve suffering of the abandoned and reduce the burden on the 2 hospitals.
Youth prey to crime in brooding border town: Kajulu lies in Western Kenya near the border with Uganda. Illegal activities thrive in this remote area, where the authorities can simply be evaded by crossing the border. Many youth drop out of school because of the high cost of secondary education and become involved in robbery, drug trafficking, drug abuse and prostitution.
Help set up a vocation training centre for youth.
To prevent youth from falling prey to illegal activities, the community has set up a project to offer vocational training. From the acquired knowledge, they stand chance of facing a brighter future. The first group of 20 youth has been identified and space for the training centre has been secured.
Famine is the order of the day in Konza. Rainfall is scarce making traditional agriculture an insecure source of food and income. No cash crops are grown in Konza and there are no other sources of income. Many people depend on food from relief agencies for survival and all suffer from food insecurity.
Help extend a successful fruit farming program
A group of 250 persons has joined hands to find a solution to food insecurity and dependency on relief agencies. 3 successful fruit farms have been set up. These provide extra food, a better diet and more income to the participants. The village group is looking for ways to extend the fruit growing program to the whole community.
