Kyomya is a very poor rural Village where a majority of the people depend on less then 1 dollar a day. 12% of the population is infected with HIV/AIDS which is way above the national average of 7%. The community faces many challenges among which the main problem is the growing number of orphan children due to HIV/AIDS. Fifth African Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect, hosted by the Uganda Chapter of the African Network for the Prevention and Protection of Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN), speakers stressed on stronger leadership in education, health care and social protection of children affected by HIV.
The government and its partners are finalising a five-year National Strategic Plan, whose priorities include adolescent and paediatric treatment and care, and the education of orphans and vulnerable children.
